通用管道和管材尺寸表
A pipeline or tube size chart helps you connect nominal size, outside diameter, wall thickness, and inside diameter so a part can be selected with fewer mistakes. The key is knowing whether you are working with pipe, which is usually specified by nominal pipe size and schedule, or tubing, which is commonly specified by actual outside diameter and wall thickness. This guide explains the main sizing terms, gives a practical pipe diameter chart in list form, and shows how to use it for everyday pipe size comparison.
What does a pipe size chart actually tell you?
A pipe size chart tells you how a named size relates to real dimensions, especially outside diameter and likely inside diameter. For pipe, the nominal size is not always the measured diameter, so a “1 inch” pipe does not usually measure exactly 1 inch across the outside or inside. The chart is a translation tool: it helps you move from trade names to physical dimensions, fittings, flow estimates, and installation planning.
Most confusion comes from mixing three ideas that sound similar but mean different things:
- Nominal pipe size, often called NPS: A size name used for pipe and fittings.
- Outside diameter, or OD: The actual outside measurement across the pipe or tube.
- Inside diameter, or ID: The open internal passage, which changes with wall thickness.
- Schedule: A pipe wall thickness series. A higher schedule usually means a thicker wall and smaller inside diameter for the same nominal pipe size.
- DN size: A metric nominal designation often used alongside NPS.
A good diameter size chart does not just list numbers. It also reminds the reader that the “right” size depends on pressure, flow, material, temperature, corrosion allowance, code requirements, joining method, and available fittings.

Standard pipe sizes in common use
The following pipe diameter chart gives commonly used nominal pipe sizes with typical outside diameters. It is intended as a general planning reference, not a substitute for an engineering specification, manufacturer data sheet, or applicable piping code.
- NPS 1/8, DN 6: outside diameter about 0.405 in, or 10.3 mm.
- NPS 1/4, DN 8: outside diameter about 0.540 in, or 13.7 mm.
- NPS 3/8, DN 10: outside diameter about 0.675 in, or 17.1 mm.
- NPS 1/2, DN 15: outside diameter about 0.840 in, or 21.3 mm.
- NPS 3/4, DN 20: outside diameter about 1.050 in, or 26.7 mm.
- NPS 1, DN 25: outside diameter about 1.315 in, or 33.4 mm.
- NPS 1 1/4, DN 32: outside diameter about 1.660 in, or 42.2 mm.
- NPS 1 1/2, DN 40: outside diameter about 1.900 in, or 48.3 mm.
- NPS 2, DN 50: outside diameter about 2.375 in, or 60.3 mm.
- NPS 2 1/2, DN 65: outside diameter about 2.875 in, or 73.0 mm.
- NPS 3, DN 80: outside diameter about 3.500 in, or 88.9 mm.
- NPS 4, DN 100: outside diameter about 4.500 in, or 114.3 mm.
- NPS 5, DN 125: outside diameter about 5.563 in, or 141.3 mm.
- NPS 6, DN 150: outside diameter about 6.625 in, or 168.3 mm.
- NPS 8, DN 200: outside diameter about 8.625 in, or 219.1 mm.
- NPS 10, DN 250: outside diameter about 10.750 in, or 273.1 mm.
- NPS 12, DN 300: outside diameter about 12.750 in, or 323.9 mm.
- NPS 14, DN 350: outside diameter about 14.000 in, or 355.6 mm.
- NPS 16, DN 400: outside diameter about 16.000 in, or 406.4 mm.
- NPS 18, DN 450: outside diameter about 18.000 in, or 457.2 mm.
- NPS 20, DN 500: outside diameter about 20.000 in, or 508.0 mm.
- NPS 24, DN 600: outside diameter about 24.000 in, or 609.6 mm.
These standard pipe sizes are widely used for carbon steel, stainless steel, process piping, mechanical systems, and many industrial pipelines. Smaller nominal sizes can be especially unintuitive because the nominal size does not match the outside diameter. From NPS 14 upward, the nominal size and outside diameter in inches commonly align, which makes large pipe easier to read at a glance.
How are pipe sizes and tube sizes different?
Pipe is generally sized by nominal pipe size and schedule, while tube is usually sized by actual outside diameter and wall thickness. That means pipe sizing starts with a trade size, then requires a schedule to determine the internal opening. Tube sizing starts closer to the physical part: a 1 inch OD tube is normally expected to measure 1 inch across the outside.
This distinction matters when ordering material, matching fittings, or replacing an existing run. A 1 inch NPS pipe and a 1 inch OD tube are not the same thing. The pipe has an outside diameter of about 1.315 inches, while the tube is usually 1.000 inch outside diameter.
Common tube size references
Tubing appears in many systems, including instrumentation, structural frames, hydraulic circuits, 热交换器, and sanitary process lines. Instead of schedule, tube descriptions often combine OD and wall thickness.
Common tube OD sizes include:
- 1/8 in OD, or 3.18 mm
- 1/4 in OD, or 6.35 mm
- 3/8 in OD, or 9.53 mm
- 1/2 in OD, or 12.7 mm
- 5/8 in OD, or 15.88 mm
- 3/4 in OD, or 19.05 mm
- 1 in OD, or 25.4 mm
- 1 1/4 in OD, or 31.75 mm
- 1 1/2 in OD, or 38.1 mm
- 2 in OD, or 50.8 mm
Typical tube wall thicknesses vary by material and use. Thin-wall tubing may be selected for weight, appearance, or heat transfer, while thicker-wall tubing may be needed for pressure, bending, threading, or mechanical strength. Always match the tube wall to the service conditions and compatible fittings.
Pipe size comparison by application
A useful pipe size comparison begins with the job the line must perform. The same outside diameter can behave very differently depending on wall thickness, material, surface finish, and the fluid or gas moving through it.
For general planning, these patterns are common:
- Small service lines: Sizes such as NPS 1/8 through NPS 1/2 are often used for instruments, vents, drains, controls, and low-flow connections.
- Branch piping: Sizes such as NPS 3/4 through NPS 2 often serve equipment connections, short distribution branches, and utility runs.
- Main distribution lines: Sizes such as NPS 3 through NPS 8 are often used where higher volume or lower pressure drop is needed.
- Large pipelines: Sizes of NPS 10 and above are used for high-flow transfer, plant headers, water mains, and process networks.
These examples are not design rules. A small line can carry high pressure, and a large line can carry low pressure. The actual selection should be based on flow rate, allowable velocity, pressure drop, pump or compressor performance, fluid properties, and safety requirements.

Schedule, wall thickness, and inside diameter
Schedule is one of the most important details in any General pipeline and tube size chart because it changes the inside diameter without changing the pipe’s outside diameter. Two pipes with the same NPS can fit the same class of external fittings, yet have different internal openings if their schedules differ.
For example, a thicker-wall pipe can improve pressure capability or durability, but it also reduces the space available for flow. That smaller inside diameter may increase velocity and pressure drop. In a process system, that can affect pump sizing, noise, erosion risk, and equipment performance.
When comparing pipe schedules, keep these practical points in mind:
- The outside diameter stays consistent for a given NPS. This allows matching with flanges, hangers, clamps, and many fittings.
- The inside diameter changes with wall thickness. A heavier schedule leaves less open area.
- The material matters. Pressure capacity is not based on schedule alone.
- Connections affect selection. Threaded, welded, grooved, flanged, compression, and sanitary connections may each have limits.
- Codes and specifications come first. A chart is useful, but the project standard decides what is acceptable.
How to use a diameter size chart correctly
To use a diameter size chart correctly, start by identifying whether the item is pipe or tube, then confirm the OD, wall thickness, and connection type. Do not rely on the name alone, especially when replacing existing material. A quick measurement can prevent ordering the wrong fittings or assuming the wrong flow area.
Use this step-by-step method:
- Identify the product type. Decide whether the part is pipe, tube, hose, conduit, or another cylindrical product.
- Measure the outside diameter. Use calipers when possible. Tape measurements can be misleading on small sizes.
- Check the wall thickness. If the end is accessible, measure the wall and calculate the inside diameter.
- Match the nominal size. Compare the OD with a pipe diameter chart for pipe, or use the measured OD directly for tube.
- Confirm the connection. Threads, flanges, compression fittings, weld ends, and grooves are not interchangeable just because the diameter seems close.
- Review service conditions. Pressure, temperature, fluid, corrosion, vibration, and cleaning requirements can all change the correct choice.
- Verify against the specification. For engineered systems, use the project documents, manufacturer data, and applicable standards.
This approach is especially helpful when old piping has no clear markings. Paint, corrosion, insulation, and field modifications can hide size labels, and visual guesses are often wrong.

Metric and inch sizing in the same system
Many projects use both inch-based NPS and metric DN designations. DN does not always mean the exact inside or outside diameter in millimeters. It is a nominal reference intended to coordinate sizes across drawings, specifications, and components.
For example, NPS 2 is commonly paired with DN 50, but its outside diameter is about 60.3 mm. That does not make the chart wrong. It simply shows that nominal systems are naming systems, not always direct measurements.
When inch and metric parts meet, confirm more than the label. Check the flange pattern, thread form, gasket size, pressure class, wall thickness, and material grade. A near match in diameter is not enough for safe interchange.

Quick selection checklist
Before choosing from a pipe or tube size list, review the essentials:
- Is the item pipe or tube?
- What is the required outside diameter?
- What wall thickness or schedule is required?
- What inside diameter is needed for flow?
- What pressure and temperature will the line see?
- What material is compatible with the fluid and environment?
- What joining method will be used?
- Are fittings, valves, supports, and gaskets available in the chosen size?
- Does the selection match the drawing, code, or customer specification?
- Has the installed space been checked for clearance and maintenance access?
A chart helps narrow the choice, but selection is complete only when the size works mechanically, hydraulically, and practically in the installed system.

Key takeaways for pipe and tube sizing
Pipe sizes are nominal, tube sizes are usually more literal, and outside diameter is the anchor point for most comparisons. For pipe, schedule determines wall thickness and inside diameter, so two pipes with the same nominal size can have different flow capacity. For tubing, the OD and wall thickness usually tell you most of what you need to know before checking material, pressure rating, and fitting compatibility.
Use a standard pipe sizes list as a starting reference, then confirm the details that affect real performance. The best pipe size comparison is not simply the closest number on a chart. It is the size that fits the connection, carries the required flow, withstands the service conditions, and complies with the project requirements.
