What is stainless steel 304l (UNS 30403)1.4307?

This V2A steel is comparable to AISI (1.4301), but differs from it in that it has a lower carbon content. The stainless steel 1.4307 has good corrosion resistance (PREN value 17.5 A 21.1) and is also resistant to intergranular corrosion in the welded state. It is not resistant to seawater or media containing salt or chlorine. Stainless steel 1.4307 has medium mechanical properties, a tensile strength of 500 A 700 N/mm², a hardness of ≤ 215 HB and a density of 7.9 kg/dm³ (at 20°C). Stainless steel AISI 304L (1.4307 / X2CrNi18-9) is non-magnetic and only slightly magnetisable (μr ≤ 1.3). It is easy to polish and has medium machinability. The material is suitable for machining and cold forming (cold massive forming and cold stamping).

Benefits of using 304L Stainless Steel
  • Can be used in highly corrosive environments
  • Low carbon content removes carbon precipitation in the welding process
  • Weld annealing only needed in high stress applications
  • Extremely similar to Type 304

Corrosion Resistance

The formation of chromium carbides is excluded because of the low carbon content. Resistance to intergranular corrosion is given. In the absence of salt and chlorine concentrations, good corrosion resistance is present in natural environmental media.

Forging

Stainless steel AISI 304L (1.4307 / X2CrNi18-9) has good forging properties and is suitable for open-die and drop forging. The material must first be heated to a temperature of 1150°C to 1180°C. Forging can then be carried out in the temperature range between 950°C and 1180°C. The material must then be rapidly cooled in air or water.

Heat Treatment
  • hardness HBW ≤: solid solution 187, hardness HRB ≤: 90,
  • heating temperature: 1010 ~ 1150,
  • heating method: fast cooling,
  • other: cold-rolled plate solid solution 485, 201HBW 92HRB 210HV.
Cold Forming

AISI 304L can be used for cold forming and also for cold massive forming (according to DIN 10263-5). Cold heading is also possible with this material.

Hot Forming

Hot forming (cooling by air): 1200-900 °C

Welding

Stainless steel AISI 304L (1.4307 / X2CrNi18-9) has excellent weldability. The material can be processed using most common welding methods such as arc welding or TIG welding. Tuttavia, this stainless steel grade is only suitable to a limited extent for gas fusion welding and submerged arc welding. A welding filler material is not required, but the material AISI 308L (1.4316) can be used as a filler. Resistance to intergranular corrosion is not affected by welding.
